{"id":3956,"date":"2023-06-11T14:56:56","date_gmt":"2023-06-11T21:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/members.solmar.com\/blog\/?p=3956"},"modified":"2023-07-03T16:48:43","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T23:48:43","slug":"indigenous-people-of-baja-california-sur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/members.solmar.com\/blog\/indigenous-people-of-baja-california-sur\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous People of Baja California Sur"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The challenging conditions of the Baja California peninsula, part of the ecological region <em><strong>Aridoamerica<\/strong><\/em>, have marked the <strong>cultures that managed to thrive<\/strong> based on three principles: <strong>austerity, self-sufficiency, and comprehensive use of biodiversity<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This space has been inhabited and populated since the last ice age, approximately 13,000 years ago, and original peoples had to create highly sophisticated, complex, yet astonishingly simple survival strategies, forming a highly efficient semi-nomadic culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marked every year on August 9th, the <strong>International Day of the World\u2019s Indigenous Peoples<\/strong> is an opportunity to celebrate these communities, their legacy, and their knowledge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">Did you know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">In order to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups, this date commemorates the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>About the first settlers of South Baja California<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The three groups found in the region were distributed in well-defined ecological niches: <strong>Peric\u00faes<\/strong> inhabiting the south, <strong>Guaycuras<\/strong> the middle portion of the state, and the <strong>Cochim\u00edes <\/strong>the north.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first explorers and historical records agreed they had a well-built and strong physical constitution. While men wore no clothes, women wore skirts made of agave fibers, reed canes or animal skins, and shells and pearls adorning ears, neck, and nose. They hunted rabbits, deer, snakes, lizards, worms, and squirrels. This group, also known as <em>Ad\u00faes<\/em> and <em>Coras<\/em>, were excellent navigators and fishermen. Although they were unaware of agricultural activities, they knew the land they inhabited very well. They fed on oysters, fish, and marine mammals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cochim\u00edes <\/strong>\u2013 These settlers extended from the north of Loreto, BCS, to San Felipe. &#8220;Cochim\u00ed&#8221; means &#8220;people who live in the northern part.&#8221; This culture had a deep knowledge of the environment and managed to lead a life in the desert.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Guaycuras <\/strong>\u2013 This culture settled from south Loreto to Todos Santos.
