Los Cabos Among The Best Destinations in the World to Fish by BOAT International

The global authority in superyachting —and everything that revolves around yachts—, BOAT International knows it best, ambas placed Los Cabos among the Top 3 destinations for sportfishing.

It’s no wonder Los Cabos has been named “The Marine Capital of The World”. Located in the very heart of what Jacques Cousteau considered the Aquarium of the World, the variety of species found within the Sea of Cortez is as vast as its area of 61,776 square miles (160 square kilometers)—.

And we share 5 reasons to venture to Cabo and put your fishing skills to the test!

Reason #1

There is a strict catch and release policy, which has undoubtedly helped to boost the population of marlin, making Los Cabos the place where more marlin and swordfish are caught than anywhere else in the world.

Reason #2

With its great geographical conditions, Baja California Sur offers professionals and amateurs of this sport a long coastline of more than 6,200 miles (10,000 kilometers) of coastline to explore.

Reason #3

There are experienced service providers with professional equipment for those on a budget as well as for those after luxury.

Reason #4

Los Cabos is the host of world-famous annual sport fishing tournaments. Six main tournaments hit the Los Cabos shores in the year: Stars & Stripes Tournament in June, Los Cabos Billfish Tournament in October, Cabo Tuna Jackpot in November and the three local Bisbee’s circuit tournaments — the Bisbee’s East Cape, Los Cabos Offshore and the Bisbee’s Black & Blue. The latter takes place in late October; and payouts can exceed $3.5 million.

Tip: Support the events from the dock while having some sun and fun watching the weigh-ins as the competing boats return.

Reason #5

Plenty of fishing seasons depending on your target.

  • Fall and winter: Excellent for all-around action.
  • Winter and Spring: Hammerheads, threshers and makos can be found during these seasons.
  • July – October: Sword-billed specimens of black and blue marlin, with average catches of six to 12 marlin a day during peak season.
  • July – November: Dorado (aka mahimahi and dolphinfish) can be readily caught.
  • September – January: Yellowfin tuna hit hard.
  • Late summer and early fall: Best for wahoo and sailfish.
  • All year long: Bottomfishing for jacks, grouper, roosterfish and snapper.

So get that fishing rod ready for your next fishing adventure in Baja! Let our Concierge team help you set a fantastic plan together. Contact them here!

Flee Lockdowns and Be Welcome to Los Cabos

The way of traveling has had some changes indeed, still the beauty and hospitality of Los Cabos has remained intact and, most importantly, rigorous protocols have been followed to protect travelers’ safety.

So, what’s it like to travel to this destination during this holiday season?

We took an extract from Los Angeles Times article: “Unwelcome in other countries, Americans are fleeing lockdowns and flocking to Mexico” to tell you more about how is it like to travel to Los Cabos these days:

“Unlike other parts of the world, Mexico does not require Americans to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test or undergo quarantine upon arrival”.

In Los Cabos — the region that includes Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo and the 20 miles of beachfront resorts between them — the local tourism board persuaded authorities to enact some of the most stringent safety measures in the country.

The group successfully lobbied for a statewide lockdown that began April 1 and since it was lifted in June has paid for thousands of coronavirus tests for workers in the tourism industry. The state — Baja California Sur — now has the second highest test rate in the country.

Hotels are limited to 50% capacity, restaurants must close by midnight, and nightclubs and bars that don’t serve food remain shuttered. Authorities have penalized three hotels and seven restaurants for not adhering to the regulations, said Eric Santillán, head of the civil protection agency in Los Cabos.

Tourism officials have stressed the safety measures in their advertising campaigns while highlighting the region’s expansive deserts and vast coastlines

Unwelcome in many countries as the virus surges worldwide, U.S. tourists are fleeing lockdowns at home and flocking to Mexico.

Nearly half a million Americans flew to Mexico in October — the most recent month for which data is available — mainly to beaches on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

Even when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has cautioned against vacationing in Mexico, many travelers pointed out that the same warnings could apply to the United States.”

Some of the testimonies given by travelers themselves, compiled by LA Times:

“It’s a good change of pace, I’d definitely prefer to be here with a mask on than in my home without one.”

—Kierston Jackson, 24, from Houston,

Many travelers agree that Coronavirus protocols down in Mexico — which include temperature checks at the entrances to stores, hotels and restaurants — seemed better than those in California.

“I feel safer here than at home, I won’t go into an Albertsons in Carpinteria, but I’ll come here.”

Juan Castro, 45, from Carpinteria.

Please remember that your health and safety is a main priority to Solmar Hotels & Resorts, as well as to Los Cabos.

New Trends on Scamming

Scammers are always looking for new ways to benefit from the momentum and COVID-19 has not been the exception. We dedicate this note to the latest scam trends to help our Members and friends to be one step ahead.

New trends on scam practices

  • They offer the opportunity to rent or sell your membership, and the only action required is to pay applicable taxes —16% VAT and up to 35% of income tax.
  • As you may not be able to travel at this moment, they introduce themselves as timeshare rental professionals and offer the opportunity to rent your unit; the only action you need to take is to pay your maintenance fees.
  • In order to buy trust, they act as part of a lawyer firm, claiming they are setting a class action lawsuit against Solmar. The argument pretends to make you believe the company has taken the unilateral decision to rescind the Vacation Club program in order to become a private residence club. Then they wait a couple of months to call again and say that Solmar is willing to buy your unit back, you just have to pay the legal formalization of transmission of property, plus VAT and income taxes to give end to the process.
  • As the scammers have records of all the transactions you have made, they can call again pretending to be an agent of the Procurator-General. Their argument this time inferes that they are following the traces of the scam you were victim of. They claim by paying a “recovery fee” of 10% you can reclaim the funds you were scammed out of.

Remember that scammers tend to look for economical or emotional instability to operate. And they are certainly taking advantage of these times of COVID-19, global economic imbalance and health issues to attain their goals. On top of this, they often search for any information available online to address their target.

So, what are our recommendations?

  • Avoid sharing personal information on Social Media channels.
  • Do not share membership details on timeshare rental forums or resale services websites.
  • Set your Social Media privacy to “only friends” in order to restrain visibility of your posts and personal data to strangers.
  • Please keep in mind that any official information regarding your membership can exclusively come from email addresses ending with @solmar.com and @trinityresortservices.com domains.

We hope you find these tips useful to prevent any deceit.

Have you noticed any other way scammers operate? Please be sure to leave your comments or write to us at: memberservices@solmar.com.

Los Cabos: Destination of Excellence for Meetings

Los Cabos Tourism Board (FITURCA) received the Destination of Excellence award during the fifth Heel Awards, organized by Meeting Professionals International, Mexico Chapter (MPI), for its outstanding collaborative work with the meeting industry.

“While meetings, events and travel have been halted due to the current health situation, the close collaboration we maintain with event planners has not ceased; The destination has successfully hosted more than 290 international events since its reopening on June 15th. This is the result of the confidence of the visitors in the destination, thanks to the correct implementation of health and safety protocols such as the Crystal International Standards ”, said Rodrigo Esponda, General Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board.

The Meetings Industry contributes 6.8% percent of the gross domestic product in Baja California Sur alone, and 20% of room nights occupied in the destination. It represents a key factor towards the tourism recovery and that of Los Cabos’ economy. Hence, maintaining and growing strategic alliances with industry partners such as MPI is essential, in order to maintain the positioning of Los Cabos as a top destination to host meetings and events from around the world.

The art of Mixology

A sommelier is known for having a wide training and specialization in all aspects of wine and food pairings, as well as wine storage. Nonetheless, the epitome of a modern sommelier may include developing wine lists for different restaurants, staff trainings, and a close work alongside executive chefs to design new dishes that pair masterfully with the wine selection.

The modern sommelier also has a deep knowledge and understanding of beer and spirits, and concoctions crafted with them, to work in harmony with the flavors involved.

This is the unequivocal description of Gamaliel López, the recently appointed Corporate Sommelier at Solmar Hotels & Resorts.

With 30 years on his tenure, Gamaliel has a wide experience in the hospitality industry, working in important restaurants in Mexico City such as Alfredo Di Roma, Maxim’s de Paris and Au Pied de Cochon, as well as renowned hotels in Los Cabos.

His credentials include a Food and Bevergae Certification and the Certify de la Court of Master Someliers.

“You have to be at the service of your guest’s taste, and that includes being aware of the latest trends in mixology, which is an art in itself.”

The balance you seek for in a wine —balance, body, acidity and tannins— are equal to that searched for when crafting a cocktail, “you look for flavors that pair perfectly, looking for perfect balance in sweetness, notes and flavors”, Gamaliel adds.

Some of the latest trends include flowers and spices infusions, and interesting spicy tones like chili, cinnamon and essences. Molecular combinations, such as avocado foam and smoked ingredients fused with surprising elements like atole, a hot corn and masa-based beverage so present in Mexican traditions.

Directly from Gamaliel Lopez’ repertoire, we share some delicious cocktails you cannot miss. Spice up your winter celebrations… and cheers!
